The reserve belongs to the type of ecological landscape reserves. According to the appointing act, its area is 304.00 ha. Hańcza is a glacial trough lake, the deepest in Poland. Its depth reaches 108.5 m, and the volume is 120.4 million m³. The banks of the lake are surrounded by a high and steep escarpment. The beach is covered with a large boulder, formed during the melting of a lump of dead ice lying in the lake gutter. The largest of these boulders - a natural monument, is called the "Border Stone". The bottom of the lake is characterized by steep slopes.
