One of the most valuable monuments of the Suwałki Lake District - a beautiful post-Camaldolese monastery complex - has been preserved on the peninsula surrounded by the waters of Lake Wigry. In 1667, King of Poland, Jan Kazimierz, wanting to fulfill the vows he made in Lviv during the Swedish invasion, gave the Wigry Lake together with the surrounding areas to the Camaldolese Order. The monks erected 17 hermits and other monastery buildings on the island, which they connected to the mainland by a wide causeway, and in 1745 they completed the construction of a magnificent baroque temple. They also founded orchards and a fish pond, and in extensive estates, which included, among others Suwałki, built numerous industrial plants. The end of their splendor was marked by the third partition of Poland. In 1800, the Prussian authorities liquidated the monastery and displaced the monks to Warsaw's Bielany. Above the monastery complex is the plastered church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary with two baroque towers. Inside there are seven altars, mostly Rococo. They contain new images because the original ones have been destroyed or dispersed. In front of the presbytery there is a descent to the crypts, in which niches with the remains of monks have been preserved. Behind the wall and the clock tower are eremahs with gardens - former hermits of monks. The host offers accommodation in these small houses. In June 1999, during his stay in the Wigry monastery, Pope John Paul II celebrated mass. After this visit, in part of the rooms, preserved in the then state, a museum was created including the Papal Chapel, Papal Apartments and the Library.
