The temple was built in 1906-1911 in an eclectic style, in place of the former Classicist church. St. Bartholomew. The parish of the foundation of King Sigismund Augustus was erected in 1549. Originally, the basilica was a wooden church, in 1767 a stone church was erected and after it was destroyed a new one in 1842-1847. The current building of the church Sacred Heart of Jesus is in the Neo-Roman style. In 1944, during the war, the temple was partially destroyed. The reconstruction was done by Fr. W. Chojnowski. On June 22, 2001, Pope John Paul II gave the church the title of Minor Basilica. On December 9, 2012, a stone with a commemorative plaque and a marble cross was unveiled in front of the basilica, commemorating the victims of the Smolensk disaster.
